Ja’Karl Jenkins, 19, was charged back in March 2017 with aggravated battery and child abuse. He was indicted by a grand jury, set for arraignment on April 17, 2017 and he failed to appear.
A warrant was issued for his arrest. Jenkins was arrested a few days later, booked at Metropolitan Detention Center and then arraigned before Judge Jacqueline Flores on July 28, 2017.
Judge Flores released Jenkins to pretrial services – FREE TO GO – after the Arnold Foundation’s “Pretrial Risk Assessment” tool determined that he was not a danger to the community or a flight risk and therefore should not be subject to any accountable release – just a “promise” to appear.
A week later, Jenkins is involved in a shootout from his vehicle and is back in custody.
How are these new judicial rules making us more safe again?
