ROCHELLE PARK, N.J. -- A Rochelle Park neighbor's call helped police snag a 62-year-old burglar moments after he'd broken into a home, authorities said Monday.
Police flooded the Lexington Avenue neighborhood after getting the call of a suspicious man getting out of a car, retrieving a bag from the trunk and donning a black hoodie around 10:15 a.m. Sunday, Detective Sgt. Jim DePreta told Daily Voice.
The caller said he then headed to the back of a home.
Responding Sgt. Ed Kukalski and Officers Brendan Stapleton and Chris Saldivia boxed in the car, set up a perimeter and summoned a Bergen County Sheriff's K-9 unit, DePreta said.
Soon after, Salldivia spotted Geoffrey Opresnick of Dover walking on High Street.
The officer arrested Ospresnick after finding him carrying a flashlight, rubber gloves, a multi-purpose tool, and a construction mask.
He later admitted seeing police while he was inside a Rochelle Avenue residence -- where he'd gone to steal antiques -- and fled toward Essex Street, DePreta said.
Ospresnick had some small items stolen from the home, the sergeant said.
Police charged him with burglary, theft, criminal attempt, criminal trespass and possession of burglary tools.
He was released, under New Jersey's new bail law, pending a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
