It took 4 cops and 2 bursts of pepper spray to subdue violent drug suspect: cops

(reported by NJ.com – May 11 2017)

A routine drug investigation turned violent for a pair of Jersey City police officers Wednesday night when a suspect angrily attempted to fight his way out of an arrest, authorities said.

It took four officers and two bursts of pepper spray, but police finally subdued Donald Bryant, 40, of Wegman Parkway, following a prolonged struggle in the Greenville section of the city, according to a police report.

Bryant, who has the words “soldier” and “art of war” tattooed on his right arm, was arrested and charged with drug offenses, resisting arrest, tampering, obstruction, and two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.

Just before 7 p.m., plain-clothed officers in an unmarked car spotted Bryant standing in front of a home on Skyline Drive, a short, dead-end street off Garfield Avenue. When another man approached, and gave him money, Bryant pulled out a clear glass jar containing a brown liquid, dipped a cigarette into the liquid and handed it to the man, the report states.

Believing they just witnessed a drug transaction, police got out of their car and approached Bryant, noting a strong odor of PCP coming from him. But Bryant “immediately became belligerent, raised his arms up, and assumed a fighting stance toward one of the officers, the report indicates.

When the police advised him to calm down, Bryant responded: “Nah, I didn’t do nothing, don’t f—–g touch me!” according to the report.

That’s when he began swinging his arms, according to police, and attempted to hit one of the officers. When the other officer tried to get control of Bryant’s arms, Bryant struck him in the head with a closed fist, the report states.

Bryant ignored loud verbal commands to “stop resisting” and grabbed one of the officers around the neck, pulling his police badge chain, cops said. In response, the other officer hit Bryant in the left side of his head twice, but he broke free from the struggle and flee west on Skyline Drive, crossing Garfield Avenue and continuing west on Wegman Parkway, per the police report.

One of the officers pursued Bryant on foot, while the other followed in their car. Bryant was seen removing a metallic object from the front of his pants but threw it on the ground when one of the cops drew his weapon and ordered him to stop, the report says.

Bryant again assumed a fighting stance and began to struggle with one of the officers, who had since holstered his weapon. Bryant hit the officer in his body with a closed fist and again ignored verbal commands to stop resisting, the report states.

Bryant then pushed the officer away and removed a black jewelry bag from his waistband and smashed it on the ground before running across the street, where he again took up a fighting stance, police said.

At that point, one of the officers sprayed Bryant’s face with pepper spray, but it still wasn’t enough to subdue him, according to the report.
