A driver hit a parked car and fled the scene with a 19-year-old man clinging to the hood of the car for about a quarter mile in Lakewood Friday afternoon, police said.

The motorist, Terick DeBose, 23, of Toms River, faces charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of an accident and a range of traffic offenses, according to police.

DeBose crashed a blue Toyota Camry into a parked vehicle in the parking lot of Pinter Elementary School, police said. When the driver tried to leave, a 19-year-old man signaled for him to stop.

Police said DeBose stopped briefly, but accelerated his car toward the bystander.

"The man lunged forward, so as not to be run over and was able to grab onto the hood of the car. As a result he sustained a minor injury to his knee," a police statement said.

With the bystander holding on, DeBose took off driving approximately 40 miles per hour on East Countyline Road, according to police.

After about a quarter of a mile, the pedestrian asked DeBose to stop and he pulled over, police said.
