Man accused of shooting into crowd was star student, attorney says
(reported by NJ.com – May 18 2017)
A Trenton man accused of firing 10 shots into a crowd and wounding a teenager earlier this month was a promising student with several college acceptances under his belt just over a year ago, according to his attorney.
But his drug problem got in the way, she said.
Quayshaun Robinson, 19, appeared in court Thursday for a hearing on charges of attempted murder and weapons offenses for the daytime shooting of an 18-year-old in Trenton. Superior Court Judge Peter Warshaw decided to keep him detained following the hearing.
Robinson, Jhava Wilson, 19, and a 17-year-old male each face homicide and weapons charges.
The shooting happened around 12:40 p.m. on May 2 on the 100 block of Walnut Avenue near Monmouth Street, police have said.
According to arrest documents read aloud in court Thursday, Robinson and his codefendants were in a pickup truck in the area when someone in the truck reached out and fired 10 shots into a street. An
18-year-old was hit in the hip and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. His condition has since improved.
The incident was captured on surveillance video and Robinson was arrested after he was identified by a co-defendant, according to court documents.
An attorney representing Robinson said Thursday that he has always been a good student but said that he suffered from drug use.
Robinson was accepted into a number of schools including Morgan State University last year and had received financial aid, Warshaw said, noting Robinson’s acceptance letters as well as several certificates and awards. During his high school career Robinson received an outstanding athletic achievement award and was recognized by State Senator Cory Booker in a 2015 letter.
“He was a very impressive young man who had the world at his feet,” Warshaw said, calling the situation “tragic.”
However, Warshaw said that Robinson was on pretrial release for another offense when he was arrested for the shooting.
